/app_spring_23/ is a video piece in response to Terry Cole’s Patient Object (2022). Filmed in the Shenandoah Mountains with a VHS camera and Sony cassette camcorder, the piece leans into the file corruption that can occur when using “out-of-date” technology. Using a high school band as the backing audio to the piece, the imperfections in the band’s performance are heightened by visual distortion. The overall effect is frustrating – there are fleeting moments of beauty that is ultimately distorted, reflecting on Cole’s themes of ephemerality, memory, and the purpose of documentation.
