In Illogical Innocence (2019) Yasmin Anlan Huang explores her identity and how it has changed since moving from Asia to the United States, having been an idol wannabe and immersed in kawaii culture for so long. In the video, she presents a tutorial on “How to Be a Former Idol” with an “autobiographical avatar” who interacts with random people on Tinder, provoking responses that illuminate the fetishization of Asian girls and the overall outlook of idol culture. The tutorial becomes a collage of Tinder interactions, Google searches, and clips of actual idols, giving the viewer an experience of what it’s like to be a former idol.
